30960032941_72920fab38_cWe landed in Costa Rica on Sunday afternoon (just as it was starting to get chilly in NYC).

30456835564_0f191e4a5d_cFrom Liberia (there’s a direct JetBlue flight from JFK), it was 20-minute drive to Andaz Peninsula Papagayo

screen-shot-2016-12-03-at-6-20-41-pm…first things first. A long, leisurely shower. Then fruits and teas and books! I mean, how could you not…

30931898242_9f99df9dcf_cDinner at Rio Bhongo. Patacons to share, guacamole and pico di gallo. A whole roasted red snapper with rice and beans.

30931881812_3d73b4a426_cUp early the next morning (a breakfast buffet is good encouragement). Fruits, fresh squeezed juices…

31074246865_794e086572_c…an “everything” omelette with the sweetest plantains.

30931845822_f7c2ac7389_cOff to the coffee farm…

30960042471_9efde385ca_c…where we also snacked on homemade corn-based sweets.

31259359122_7e623750ec_cBack in time for lunch at Ostra. This ceviche!! It was so good I had it again for lunch and dinner (twice) the following day. They have three ceviche options:

  • Classic | fish of the day, leche de tigre, sweet corn and rocoto
  • Caribbean | fish of the day, coconut milk, tomato, and chili pepper
  • Mix | fish of the day, prawns, and octopus. Classic or Caribbean sauce

I tried all three versions (multiple times). My favorite? The classic. Something about that leche de tigre. The fish changed daily – grouper one day, sea bass another. Ideal with chips though I could have just as easily inhaled it straight from the coconut.

31073958685_44910548ab_c…exploring around the property.

31038514686_cafa52b170_cI love all the new fruit and produce you encounter when traveling. Meet granadilla. It’s the cousin of lilikoi/passion fruit. Break open the shell and the fruit/seeds are in little sacs kept safe by furry fingers. The texture is wild.

30931699172_2b9dc26db3_cThere’s also this other fruit called naranjilla. It’s like a cross between lime and orange…

31074060305_d80de56f5f_c….and often used in beverages like this one made of naranjilla with watermelon and ginger. The one in the back is a concoction of grapefruit, lemongrass, and rosemary.

31074179665_7cfb188eb6_cDinner at Chao Pescao. So many little things to share. Fresh baby corn with almonds. Chicken arepas…

30960000881_c92a77f41d_c…tuna and mango, and empanadas stuffed with ricotta, eggplant, and basil. Confit pork with rice and beans.

31038410296_b451539420_cChocolate cake and cream (pretty much an Oreo in glorious cake form) for dessert.

31038413916_5f692437ce_cWe happened to be there the night of the super moon.

30931789362_17c3087313_cBreakfast in bed. Chorreadas! Warm corn pancakes, sides of sour cream and maple syrup. Keeping it light before…

30959963091_311b41cb83_c…a visit to the spa. Chilled green tea and lemongrass.

30931769672_b0850ab90f_cNo complaints ^-^

30959938161_483f541d1a_cLunch back at Ostra for more ceviche heheh…

30931763462_8f5fff4aea_c…and one whole grandilla, simply blended with ice.

30888320580_ea9992bbbe_cMy favorite parts about resort holidays is…

31074193695_faa0967296_c…not feeling the least bit guilty about spending days in bed with books.

31038359956_d24850702a_cFrozen coffee-chocolate and plenty of whipped cream at Rio Bhongo, a little treat before cocktails…

31038301736_81eaa7163a_c…at Chao Pescao…

31038294846_a0c754aa43_c…and dinner at Ostra (told you I couldn’t get enough of the ceviche).

30931679932_6b7b2c6023_cWe finished with a parade of sweets including this delicate apple and cream tart.screen-shot-2016-12-03-at-6-18-10-pmSaving the best breakfast for last? Perhaps…

30931674162_7068445797_c…sweet plantains laced with honey. Fried eggs, fried cheese. Avocado, tomatoes. Gallo pinto. Watermelon juice.

30931649442_6ef68841b8_cAnd the one last stroll around the property…

30959830131_a9ab873301_c…before heading back to home NYC.

Big thank you to Andaz Peninsula Papagayo and JetBlue (and Alison!) for making this much anticipated holiday possible ^-^
