We visit Mariposa on a weekly basis. The food is not as good as it once was, but it’s still a perfect place to host a business lunch with clients. Beautiful with just enough sunshine and high ceilings, I also like to work here in the afternoons (though avoid the afternoon tea ;)
Lunch begins with a demitasse cup of chicken consommé and golden popovers (replaced with monkey bread for dinner service) with strawberry butter. They sometimes do lilikoi and pineapple-papaya butter but I haven’t seen either recently.
And then the Mariposa corn chowder, hearty with celery, potatoes, and chive. Sometimes I just order a large bowl with a side of fries and glass of riesling. Lunch!
But for the most part you’ll spot lobster clubs and salads on the majority of tables. Like this seared local ahi and kampachi salad with toasted nori vinaigrette. Served over a tangle of soba, snowpeas, watercress and peppers.
Or a chilled crab salad with hearts of palm, Maui butter lettuce, shaved radish, and avocado. Tossed in a green goddess dressing.
And my go-to dish, diver scallops over hearts of palm purée. Sautéed alii mushrooms (so meaty!), spinach, pancetta, and lemon-chive butter to complete.
Can’t skip the warm lilikoi pudding (like a cross between a soufflé and hot custard) for dessert. It’s been on the menu since opening day and I hope it stays forever ^_^
