In Florence, there is a beloved gelato shop called Vivoli. It’s been around since the 1930s. A family business, three generations in. I’ve had it on my must-visit list for years…but guess what? They decided to open here!
Here as here in NYC.
As in on the 6th floor of Macy’s. Enter though Broadway and 35th, take the express elevator to avoid the crowds. It’s Vivoli’s only location outside of Florence.
The best way to approach a new gelateria is to devour as many flavors as possible in one sitting. Start with Honey…
…and chase it with spoonfuls of Crema. A higher ratio of egg yolks to whites gives it this soft butter-yellow shade ^_^
Break for a cappuccino and then dive into a potent cup of Pistachio.
Pera, a baked bosc pear sorbet is simple and pure….
…while Croccante mixes in crushed, caramelized almonds into a crema base.
And if you get really lucky there might be a batch of coffee…
…but whatever you do, don’t miss the Riso!! I love riso gelato. Both Otto and L’arte del Gelato features Riso from time to time. But at Vivoli it’s part of the regular line-up. Heaven. Creamy arborio rice pudding slowly churned into gelato. What more could you ask for?
