There’s a bunch of new wave, mainland-style, hipster restaurants in Honolulu…

…they can be hit or miss, but The Whole Ox is a solid bet. It’s order at the counter durning lunch, with full table service (and byob) at dinner.

The side dishes here are my favorite part of the menu…

…think potato-leek pirogies with kimchee cream (pictured at top), roasted MA’O roots with a carrot top yogurt sauce, and this plate of roasted butternut squash with fried sage and pancetta. You could order 2-3 sides for a full dinner.

They also have an appetizer of foie gras poutine which I need to return for. Fried red potatoes with foie gras gravy and foie gras torchon, crisp pork bits and taleggio. Ho man. Remember the last time we had foie gras poutine?

There are three main dishes: a 21-day dry aged burger, roasted Jidori chicken, and Kielbasa Sausage. The sausage is made from kiawe wood-smoked Shinsato pork and comes with kimchee and a swipe of dijon. We forgot to order bread!

For dessert? It changes all the time, but they’re currently offering mini gingerbread-dusted malassadas ^_^
