Now THIS is a doughnut. A Poi Doughnut.
It’s all soft and fluffy (soooo fluffy!), super moist with that haunting, starchy-sweet flavor of poi. The exterior crunches a bit with the glaze and it’s…bliss? Heaven? Both! And that color. I can’t stop staring or eating. Two doughnuts for breakfast is perfect.
It’s not pretty on the outside, a black-brown tennis ball sized
that appears burnt, the sugar glaze flaking off. But looks don’t matter in this case.
Kamehameha Bakery also makes amazing haupia malassadas
poi-haupia doughnuts – more on those in another post.
Make sure you go early in the morning…or super late at night. The bakery opens at 2am (!) and closes at 4pm on weekdays and opens from 3am-12pm on weekends.
The poi doughnuts are only $.80 apiece.
My grandma thought I was crazy when I told her we pay $3 for
doughnuts in NYC ^_^
