Sugar Rush’ed…

Happy Friday! I write the ‘Sugar Rush’ column + other sweet stuff for Serious Eats.

Dominique Ansel’s new bakery just opened up a few days ago. And that is very good news!! It’s the only place in the city to find Gâteau Battu (pictured above), a specialty of Picardy that is so decadent and buttery when warm from the oven. Slather on the soft butter and jam (though note that they charge an extra $3 for that). We drank glasses of cucumber-thyme lemonade at The Dutch and devoured a sweet potato pie at Peels. The fudgy slices of chocolate-almond-pear cake at Doughboy Bake Shop are impossibly rich, but I keep going back for more. And who cares about chilly weather when Buvette is making ice cream and sorbets in-house? Don’t forget to visit Benoit for the dessert bar at brunch – mark me down for Tarte Tropezienne and Ile Flottante.
