Today’s Peanut Butter Parfait ‘Sugar Rush’ed’ for Serious Eats

For years I’ve been lusting over pretty blog posts (especially those design blogs!) that incorporate text into photos. Done wrong and it ruins a good photo, but done right and…it’s just. super. awesome.

– I love how honey & jam uses it in a before/after shot of Roasted Tomato Soup
– And the way colored text matches the fruit at Desserts for Breakfast
– Oh Joy! always manages to do it in the most stylish manner

I’m no tech expert and confess that I’ve been meaning to learn how to put text in photos for a very long time. Well I got photoshop the other day and…ta-dah…heheheh :D [update: okay, learned that you can also do this in flickr. wow, time to get in touch with technology!] What do you think? Is it cheesy and unnecessary or would it be fun to break down a new dessert each week, layer by layer? Some are just so detailed!!

Stephanie! Ahh I feel stupid – had no idea you could do it in Picassa. I've always used Flickr (since all my photos have been stored there from "day one") and I think you need to pay extra for "bonus" features. Going to check out Picasa now – thanks!!update: ok, feel really silly now ;) it can be done in flickr as well! So much for photoshop…

I'm a huge fan of text-in photos :) I've got photoshop as well… but you don't need photoshop for such a simple um… procedure :) Picassa will do the same thing… it's easier on the wallet and the brain! The free option is the paint program… but it's severely limited. Love Oh Joy! :)

Photoshop is great… you just need to spend time to learn all its features. Hope you didn't purchase it JUST for it's text feature! If you have a friend who is a student or teacher… Adobe gives HUGE discounts! Rather than paying HUNDREDS of dollars… you pay $100 :) Oh well… hope you enjoy photoshop!

Put me on the Nay side.Text in a picture IMO ruins the whole idea of putting in a picture. Besides– isn't there a saying "a picture is worth a thousands words?"Looking at a picture with a text inside kills the beauty of the picture, and often drive people look at the descriptive part than the picture itself. My humble $0.02

Hi Bob! Point taken! :) I like it myself but can understand how others might think it ruins a photo. Wish I could somehow combine the best of both words haha :)

I like the idea of everything in moderation, including text in photos. Pictures do speak a thousand words, but adding words can guide a beautiful, funny, or informative story or instructional. I think you've answered your own question by providing links to some of the best examples of text in photos. To me, it's just another form of storytelling, a valid form, but one that can be done well or not so well. Take your cue from the best in the craft. =)
