A Boston Ice Cream Tour: JP Licks, Emack & Bolio’s, Picco, Toscanini’s, and Christina’s Homemade Ice Cream

Steph is visiting from Boston soon and I believe it was around this same time last year when it was the other way around and I was visiting her in Boston. I recall the weather being so hot one day that all we could do was eat ice cream.

And that’s exactly what we did.

We started at JP Licks

…a scoop each of Mint-Oreo and Kugel Pudding Ice Cream with Hot Fudge

…hot fudge on the side of course ;) Always nice to control where the fudge flows.

A short walk took us to the doors of Emack & Bolio’s

…you can’t go wrong with their Mud Pie, java ice cream with Oreos and chocolate bits.

And then we moved on to Picco

…where a sundae composed of Dark Chocolate Ice Cream, Raspberry Chip Ice Cream, and fresh Whipped Cream

…was the end to an excellent lunch of spaghetti chitarra and a half-half pizza. Two seats at the bar and lots of iced water please!

Post lunch we walked to Steph’s apartment in Back Bay (so much bigger than the tiny NYC apartment we used to share) for a little nap and air conditioning before heading over the bridge to…

…the famed Toscanini’s in Cambridge. So many options!

But our heart was set on the Black Bottom (consisting of chocolate pudding, ginger and molasses) and Afternoon Tea Ice Cream. I mean, tea ice cream folded with bits of soft vanilla cake? How could you not.

I made a return trip for the Burnt Caramel Ice Cream the following day, heheh.

A short bus ride took us to Christina’s Homemade Ice Cream where we found …

…a generous scoop of pistachio-studded Kulfee Ice Cream to be the perfect finish to the day.

I live in Boston and sad to say I've only been to Christina's and was totally disappointed. The place was really mom and pop- kinda like Waiola shave ice that totally smelled like a Down to Earth store. great post! I must get some ice cream now. By the way, do you take people around NYC to different restaurants for a fee?

    Maaan I really liked Toscanini's. Sort of didn't expect to since it's got so much hype, but then I ended up going twice in a three-day weekend.What was your fave? I only got to try Christina's besides Toscanini's. ;_;

Hey Robyn! If I had to pick…would be tie between Picco and Toscanini's! I didn't expect to like Toscanini as much either, but it totally won me over. It wasn't so much just the burnt caramel (though that was awesome) as it was all their other flavors too. Love how they let you sample a ton before settling on one or two haha.

This is what Im talking about. The ideal meal for this heat wave. I havent tasted Toscanini yet but have been waiting a lifetime to eat the burnt caramel ice cream. I was even convinced to buy a $10 coupon worth off Toscanini's from one of those deal sites. I live in NYC so I had a lot of convincing hearts tell me its not worth it and youre never in Boston. So… I listened. But, I totally regret not getting it now!

Hi Christine! Seriously, isn't it? :) Am surprised to hear that Toscanini's was even on one of those deal sites…seems like they were going to well. You should totally just make a weekend trip out of it! ^_^Hi Soos! I love all the flavors that have a lot of "stuff" in them at Emack's, pretzels, cake, marshmallows, etc, you name it! ^_^

Hi Jay! Haven't tried milkmade yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list ^_^ I've taken people around to NYC restaurants and sweet shopes for a fee, all on a case by case basis. Email me at [email protected] if you have more questions about that :)
