Village Voice Choice Eats 2011

[This was before the crowds…very big crowds!]

This post comes belated, but better late than never. The Village Voice Choice Eats 2011 took place last month, and each year it seems to get bigger, always with an impressive line-up of restaurants. Having attended in the past I figured I had a good strategy down. This event gets crowded but so long as you map out the restaurants on the top of your priority list and hit those first with no delay (not even for beer – and boy was there plenty of beer!), you should be okay.

Favorite bites from the evening:

Kobe Beef Belly and Chives from Takashi. We had an excellent dinner at Takashi the week before so I was truly excited to see them at Choice Eats. The woman serving at the event actually remembered me from the restaurant – that was pretty neat!

Chocolate and Eggplant with Ricotta Stracciatella from Del Posto. They also served this at SWEET 2010 – one of my all time favorite desserts

Shrimp Rolls from Red Hook Lobster Pound. They went fast as you can imagine.

Smoked Cauliflower, Buttermilk Waffles, Wild Arugula from Dirt Candy.

Smash-Bang Chicken from Baohaus. The only vendor that included white rice with their dish – almost makes me homesick for Hawai’i!

Wasn't that a great event? I loved the smash chicken but not a fan of the smoked cauliflower from Dirt Candy. I literally couldn't eat one more bite about 20 minutes into the event. Can't wait till next year.

Hi Stephanie! hehe, sorry for all the tea-overkill, was obsessed for a bit there…hopefully there will be more balance in the future :)Hi Reid!! I hope so too :) Will you be making a stop in NYC when you do Chicago this summer?Hi Alina! It was indeed – the smash chicken and the Takashi's beef belly were the two that I got seconds from, hehe. I somehow managed to COMPLETELY miss the sweet room, that will have to be fixed next year! :)
