NYC | Afternoon Tea at The Carlyle Hotel

Another week, another afternoon tea ^_^

You already know how much I love afternoon tea. The little bites, the balance of sweet and savory, the oodles of cream, jams, and curds, the hours devoted to relaxation, and of course, a hot pot of tea. Doing afternoon tea correctly is an art.

We’re at The Carlyle and tea takes place in The Gallery. Three sets available:

  •  Afternoon Tea ($48) – tea, sandwiches, scones, and pastries
  •  Imperial Tea ($65) – afternoon tea plus a glass of Louis Roederer, Brut Premier NV
  •  À la carte – tea ($8), sandwiches ($18), scones ($15), pastries ($18)

Love the menu, it’s like a little fairytale book.

I went with Robyn and D, we each had a complete afternoon tea set.

Pots, cups, and strainers. High points for all the little details.

They serve tea from Harney & Sons, offering a board selection of 20 teas.

I drank the black currant tea.

Let’s begin with sandwiches. These were dense and pre-made…if you’re a stickler about tea sandwiches, head to the St. Regis. Now those are

A simple ham…

…and then turkey and mayo.

Smoked salmon with cream cheese

Cucumber and butter

Egg salad with watercress.

Scones were on the dry/stale side, but…

…kudos for serving devonshire cream (not many places do that anymore) and excellent strawberry preserves.

You get two scones per person, though we only got through one each.

Sweets! Four came on the same base. A frangipane-filled tart topped with…

…chocolate mousse…

…passionfruit/lilikoi curd…

…pistachio cream…

…and raspberries with coconut.

This best of the sweets. Layers of dark chocolate sponge, feuilletine, and coffee cream.

Afternoon tea is served daily from 3-5:30pm (no need for reservations). What becomes of The Gallery in the evenings? Why, a fine place for foie, cheese, and port ^_^

LOVELY! I always go to Bemelman's for sidecars. I think I need to venture up earlier in the day for tea!

I had tea at the Carlyle yesterday – it was by all measures, dreadful. Nothing like the pictures shown on this website.First of all, English tea sandwiches are never on thick bread, the bread needs to be very thin. The scones were pitiful and the cakes didn’t seem fresh or interesting. That certainly is the last time for me.
