Afternoon Tea at the Mandarin Oriental today. Or maybe…afternoon tea + cocktails rolled into one? Why not.
Table for two on the 35th floor. In this city, a different world is a subway ride away. I always wondered what it would be like to live in a hotel. Put that on my bucket list. We’re drinking Darjeeling today, no cream or sugar for this one please.
Sandwiches to start. In the back, a classic Watercress Sandwich – cucumber and goat cream cheese on brioche, love how the watercress is inside the cucumber on top. And in front, Smoked Salmon Roulade with caper mousse on pumpernickel bread.
We move on to the Curry Chicken Canape – presented with honeycrisp apples on brioche and the Egg Salad accented with mustard mousse, also on brioche.
The Mandarin’s signature Ginger Scones, served warm…
…alongside Devon Cream and Housemade Orange Marmalade. This cream is whipped and lighter than the norm. I could finish it off by the spoonful. And so I do.
Petit Fours, a cookie and tart plate served after the sandwiches and scones are whisked away. Count little lemon curds tarts and fresh raspberries, biscotti, chocolate shortbread and meringues, pecan bars, and a chocolate coconut custard tart. All the more reason to relax here for another hour or two. The sun should be setting soon, make sure you have a good view.
And finally, cheers to the late afternoon with Bella Pesca, a champagne cocktail with elderflower liquer, lychee and grapefruit juice and a splash of Chambord.
