NYC: 15 East

The 15 East is one of my favorite spots in the city for a solo lunch. 3-courses for $29, an excellent deal. Super zen, I always walk out feeling like I came from the spa. If money wasn’t an issue I’d just go sit at the sushi bar everyday for lunch.

The menu options for the lunch prix fixe changes daily, and today I started with Tai Sashimi Salad, the thin-cut fish wrapped around shaved burdock root, served with radishes and sesame-miso dressing.

They initially brought out the wrong salad, which is how I would up with this Salad of Market Greens, a colorful tangle of mizuna, shitake and shimeji mushrooms, purple and orange beets, and grapefruit-avocado dressing. How beautiful is that? Two appetizers, no complaints :)

For the main course they offered housemade soba with anago tempura, roasted miso salmon dotted in ikura, or sushi. Other options are tempting, but I go with sushi. It’s Chef’s choice, and somehow there’s always uni tucked among my selection. Today, an extra tongue (Santa Barbara uni) layered on top for decadence. Look how it oozes onto the territory of salmon. Oh man that put the biggest smile on my face. Heaven!

Finishing on a Bittersweet Chocolate Cake, served warm with strawberries and vanilla ice cream.

Has Pierre been to Hawaii yet with you? I know you've been to Paris & met his side of the family. I'm sure a lot of your faithful readers want to know.

I am immeasurably jealous. New Zealand isn't exactly a hot bed of uni, and even though the salmon roe sushi I ate tonight was like eating tiny, exploding balls of the sea… it was no uni.
