On each trip back to Honolulu, I always make a point to revisit my favorite local desserts* and sweet shops. It's equal parts taste and nostalgia - none are as "sophisticated" as the desserts we often eat in NYC, but in many ways, these are much better. Straightforward, less contrived, never trying too hard. There's nothing hipster, nothing avant garde. Just simple goodness, guaranteed to make you smile.
Old favorites include a stop at Bubbies for...
...a single dip Oreo cone. Don't forget the mochi ice cream! As remember the time we had 'Eat My Balls'? One scoop of every single flavor, 16 in total. Heheh.
Can't forget Liliha Bakery's chantilly-topped Coco Puffs in chocolate and green tea......or a visit to Champion's for malassadas fried to order...
An Apple Napple from Zippy's...
...and a whole Chantilly Cake (per my cousin's request). Check out the cake slice here.
Blueberry Cream Cheese Square from Diamond Head Market & Grill...don't forget about their Blueberry-Cream Cheese Scones, equally amazing.
...and fresh mochi from Nisshodo Mochiya in Kalihi.
The Chocolate Decadence cake from Saint Germain Bakery...
...and an Orgura Cake (the frosting is made with azuki beans) to bring to Grandma's the following night. She always has hot tea ready to pair with sweets...
...poured into Styrofoam cups of course. When you're over 80 years old and insist on doing all the cooking and cleaning for 10-15 people on any given evening, this is how it's done. And that's how we call it a night.*Check here for my post on 'must eat' desserts if you're new to Honolulu :)
