Snow day! 12pm, walking through Washington Square Park. Meeting Jess for lunch at Mas (la grillade), a restaurant best known for grilling and smoking techniques, seemingly simple dishes that focus on the ingredients. See their NYT review here.
Here we are, at the intersection of 7th Avenue South and Leroy Street. Two floors – upstairs is best, peaceful with amazing light, glass sunroof.
We start with bread, a warm demi-baguette, and salted, room temperature butter.
Appetizers to share. Grilled squid stuffed with bay leaves, crisp tentacles. Bright cheery presentation…
…and grilled whole Portuguese sardines. Savory, slightly charred skin. I wound up eating most off the bones, impossible to pick off but completely worth the effort.
Jess went with the grilled skate with walnut-parsley gremolata, smoked celery root puree and grilled treviso…
…while I ate housemade, smoked lamb sausage with brussels sprouts and violet mustard. Generous portions, and the tiniest (and sweetest!) brussels sprouts in town.
Finishing sweet – grilled pineapples laced in lime syrup, a dish of cool earl grey custard to dip. The custard was supple, like a very loose pudding and intensely flavored with earl grey – I could have easily devoured three more plates like this.
