Hawai’i: A New Favorite Plate Lunch

Here’s the view from our table, complete with guava chicken and pork katsu.

One for each, we wiped it clean.

The drive out to recently opened He’eia Pier in Kaneohe was a long – a hour door to door from Tantalus, but well worth it. Think upscale plates lunch creations, fresh local fish and meats, Ma’o greens. Hot white rice and kalo mac salad awaits!

Mom was a little suspect when we arrived….are you sure the food here is good? Rundown, a bit desolate. Looks can be deceiving. We came for a late so the place was winding down. Fishermen, kids and old timers occupying the outdoor tables.

About those tables – the outdoor ones are where everyone seems to sit, but I prefer the tables inside, away from the wind and with a clear view of the water. It feels like you’re on top of the ocean. Don’t miss those palm trees in the distance – so beautiful.

All plates come with white rice and your choice of kalo (taro) mac salad or tossed greens. We tried them both. The verdict? No need for greens when you got mac salad this good. It’s fun departure from the ordinary and the diced kalo portion is generous. Crisp crust on the pork katsu – a truly juicy cut, the sweet katsu sauce is housemade.

The barbecue chicken is done with a guava marinade, charred in just the right spots and moist through and through. Barbecue chicken sounds boring – this is anything but. We’re bringing dad back to try the burger this weekend. Will be sure to add on sliced avocado and crinkle cut fries! Maybe even finish with shave ice for dessert.

Beautiful, both the scenery and the food! Kalo mac salad sounds awesome. There are a few places out here that serve Hawaiian food, but they all have almost the same menu and taste the same, and only one is run by native Hawaiians–the the only place that serves delicious pork laulau. I hope I get to try the real deal, right on the islands some day!

Hi Winnie! Yes!! I don't know any place else on the island that does a kalo mac salad – so good :)Hi Amy! Wish I could extend this stay for just a littttle while longer :) Hope all is well is NYC! ^_^Hi Julie! Thank you! Same goes for the Hawaii food scene in NYC…there's one place we can get laulau, but it's not quite the same ;) Hope you make it to the islands one day!
