NYC: Jean Georges with Justin

Amuse Bouche: Trout Sashimi with Snap Pea Dressing, Carrot-Miso Soup, and Pickled Radish and Dijon Mustard Butter Toast

Justin was in NYC last week (hooray – have not seen you since Christmas ’09 in Hawai’i!) so we took plenty advantage of flexible schedules and had an abundance of great meals. Our last meal together was for lunch at Jean Georges, a restaurant I have been meaning to visit for a very long time.

JG offers a lunch prix fixe of $29 for two-courses, and $8 for dessert. I was expecting a lot, perhaps too much, because we came away underwhelmed, with both service and food.

Appetizers were the highlight (especially that Foie Gras Brulee), mains were disappointing, and dessert? The highs were high and the lows were forgettable. What I couldn’t get over was how messily plated and disorganized the plates were, so different from these. I would have gladly paid extra for the “four play” style as opposed the chaotic takes served at lunch. They’re the same desserts plated differently.

Perhaps we ordered wrong? Maybe you can tell me. I enjoyed lunch experiences at Eleven Madison Park ($28 for two courses, $12 for dessert) and Del Posto ($29 for three courses) significantly more, and would gladly pick lunch at either of those two restaurants in place of JG.

Coach Farms Goat Cheese Gnocchi, Caramelized Baby Artichokes, Lemon and Olive Oil

Caramelized Veal, Silky Cauliflower and Kumquats with Chartreuse
Desserts are split in four categories: Garden, Rhubarb, Citrus, and Chocolate. We shared the Garden and Citrus.

Garden: Chocolate Cremeux (bottom left), Chocolate Mochi (the one that looks like the Chocolate Cremeux on the right middle), Blackberries (the fruit rollup esque creation), Hazelnut Bitter Almond Macaron (closer look), Sweet Pea Ice Cream, Green Almonds

Citrus: Meyer Lemon Shaker Tart (closer look), Hazelnut Streusel, Meyer Lemon Sorbet, Matcha Semifreddo, Almond Praline, Seville Orange, Candied Kumquats.

The Matcha Semifreddo was the definite highlight of this set. The Almond Praline on which it was served was abundantly studded with pop rocks…can you imagine the surprise effect of that first bite? poppopshock! Semifreddo itself was wonderful, a velvety chill with a center of kumquat marmalade. I would have loved a giant version of the semifreddo, hehehe.

    I went on monday, and I felt underwhelmed like you did. Everything was okay, not amazing. I had the sweetbreads and the scallops which was a $8 supplement for literally 1 scallop cut crosswise into 3 slivers. My water and my lady's wine was spilled a bit I felt like it should have been a lot considering its a 3 michelin star and I've had much much better at lower ranked places.

    I agree with your post – that in your other pics the plating & presentation was much better than this meal at JG Kathy. Funny! (I still would have gladly dined with you though, tee hee…) The end of your post today inspired me. We are going with friends to the lake for the weekend and as a surprise I ordered portable Korean grills to make Smore's. I was vascillating on whether to spend the time and effort getting real marshmallows and your picture from the "marshmallow cart" made me realize it is a must-have: to get the real thing. THANKS!

    Hey Ricky!Glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way heheh. It wasn't so much disappointing as it was underwhelming if that makes sense. I was a little sad! Was expecting a lot…but will be sticking with EMP and Del Posto in the future for "fancy" lunches :)Hey Ann!Thanks!Hey Shine!Oh man, it sounds like you're going to have a great weekend!! Yes, "real" marshmallows are totally worth the extra time and effort…and plus you can also customize your flavors when you do it yourself. Glad the post was helpful! :)

    @ Kathy, so sorry to hear that you were underwhelmed. I've always loved JG. I can't argue with EMP, but I do hope you give JG another chance some day. (And thanks for linking to my flickr photos).
