Hawai'i: Shirokiya

So many goodies to be discovered here! Remember the fresh Tsukitate mochi we got? That's only the beginning ^_^
I stop in Shirokiya many times when I am in Hawai'i. Not including the "formal" restaurants in the Ala Moana, Shirokya is my favourite place to eat in the mall. Sometimes I get the packaged sushi or sashimi set (sashimi from Take's). Get some hot rice on the side, and you are all set.
Shirokiya also brings in a food demos from Japan on a weekly basis. These guys with the mini fried shrimp musubis are pretty popular...
...I had them three days in a row for afternoon "snack" last week!
These pork buns were also another demo from the same week...man, juicy like you wouldn't believe :)
Freshly steamed buns are brushed with sesame paste, and then topped with the buta kakuni.
Assembly line. On the bottom right are lots of tiny, tiny musubis sold in six packs...a rainbow of colours. You can find my last Shirokiya post from summer 2008 here...not too much has changed about this place...thank goodness :)

When we are at the mall together (rare) my son and I share the $6.95 sashimi tray - hopefully with salmon! - and a bento with nishime.

Absolutely mouthwatering. As always, loving your Hawaii posts!

Hi Kathy!

I always love the smell of that area and there's never a bento or dish I've had that was even close to bad. Oh how I miss it!

I love "shopping" at Shirokiya. The worst is choosing since there is such variety. Lately I have been gravitating to the Tonkatsu area which is from Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin in Waiks.

PS - Did you get to the KCC market this trip?

Hey Soos!
Yeah! My mom and I always split the sashimi tray and other "snacks" ^_^

Hey Marie!
Super thanks! ^_^

Hey Cassaendra!
I much agree! The options are almost overwhelming! :)

Hey Alan!
No time for KCC this trip :[ I love Tonkatsu! I've been to the restaurant in Waikiki, but haven't tried their katsu that Shirokiya carries. Too much to eat, too little time! ^_^

I just stumbled upon your site recently while reading some other Hawaiian food blogs. It's weird, you and I are almost the same but opposite...I grew up in NYC, went to NYU, worked at PwC (for 8 years), and now I live in Honolulu! It's been fun reading your posts about NYC (makes me miss it!) and Hawaii (now I have a list of places to try out next!). Since you live in the East Village, a friend of a friend just opened an eatery in LES (Rivington St btw Norfolk & Suffolk) called BaoHaus. They also have those pork baos like your picture of the one they sell at Shirokiya. Check it out and see if it comes close!

Hey Cleone!
Thanks for the comment...we're like the same, but backwards, ahaha ^_^ A good friend of mine, Joe, (who also writes for Serious Eats) recently did a writeup on BaoHaus -> http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2010/01/a-first-look-at-baohaus-review-lower-east-side-manhattan-new.html ...it sounds good, I'll definitely have to give it a try! :)
