Sunday Afternoon…

…calls for a post-Costco stop at Waiola’s, without a doubt, the finest shave ice on the island. Literally. The finest. The ice melts like powder, too quickly on the tongue leaving trace memories of sweet flavours. Red li hing mui stains, lacing your tongue and fingers are the only visible evidence.

A large cup with li hing mui and lilikoi for dad…

…while mom and I indulged in the huuuuge mochi bowl. Surprising, almost scary, how quickly this goes down. We opted for a li hing mui and lychee duo, and pour of soft azuki beans and condensed milk. A ring of house made mochi in pink and white lined the bowl – the perfect finish.

Went to the Waiola Shave Ice on Kapahulu this weekend after a trip to the zoo. My girlfriend told me that the quality at this location is significantly lower than the original Waiola, but I wanted to find that out for myself when we went.Well I found out that it’s true. The shave ice was not as fine as the original Waiola’s. But what really was disappointing was the service. I ordered a vanilla/lychee shave ice with ice cream and condensed milk, but didn’t get the ice cream or the condensed milk. My girlfriend ordered a POG/watermelon shave ice but got hers after the three people behind us got theirs and after she politely wondered where her order was.Oh well. I guess the Waiola on Kapahulu is for the tourists, while the original Waiola is for the kamaaina.

Just went to Waiola, the original one, this past Sunday too. I went for the plain shave ice with blue vanilla syrup. Felt like going pure and basic that day. Me and the 3 friends I went with all agreed that Waiola is the best shave ice. There was mention of Baldwin’s, Matsumoto’s, and a little shop in Aiea Shopping Center, but nothing compared to Waiola. The other good thing is the service is fast. Had about 10 people in front of us, but we go our order within 5 minutes. Does anybody know if the ownership of the original Waiola changed? My friend remembers it being run by an old couple and now it seems to be run by younger folks.

MMMM Waiola Shave Ice! I agree with the others in that the Kapahulu store is junk. Went there the other day and I had bare ice 2/3 of the way down so no juice on the ice cream. Not Good!Never had that problem at the original store.Alan from Makiki

Hey Marvo!Same thoughts here – have been to the Kapahulu location a few times, no where near as good! o_OHey Fergusson!Ooo that shop in Aiea is my second favourite for shave ice – they have this custard bowl that’s nutso, not to mention a larger selection of flavours and combos…But as far as texture goes, Waiola’s is easily the best! ^_^ Not too sure on the ownership changes, if any…Hey Alan!Exactly! The Kapahulu location shouldn’t even be named Waiola’s! ;)Hey Kat!hhehehe, it’s the only way to live! :)Hey Anon!Pretty wonderful world it is, eh? ;)Danny! The shave ice not from Costco, but from another place not too far away, Waiola’s (though Hawai’i Costco does carry an awesome brand of local sherberts, heheheh ^_^)
